The world is to live in, not to be ruled by trade
The longstanding deadlock of the WTO’s trade negotiation has been rejuvenated through unanimous acceptance of the final declaration of the sixth ministerial meeting. The ministers from the WTO’s 149 member countries approved the declaration after six days of diversified negotiations, grouping, lobbying during 13-18 December 2005, at Hong Kong. Though the WTO official described this ministerial as significant progress to the July 2004 package and a good success of negotiation but, in fact, the achievement of the LDCs from this summit is far beyond their expectations and, almost nil for Bangladesh. In this relation Md. Shamsuddoha and Rezaul Karim Chowdhury of SUPRO have written an analytical paper in view of their experiences focusing country perspective and SUPRO's position on the WTO issues.   In January 2005 the final draft of PRSP document was published. Although the PRSP is hailed to be the harbinger of a democratic process of country ownership, but the key steps to make it participatory i.e. taking views from all stakeholders including households, communities and parliament approval are missing. Therefore to raise critical NGOs and CSOs awareness on PRSP, SUPRO with the support from CORDAID, the Netherlands organized a nation-wide campaign titled 'Positioning and Civil Society Mobilization in the Preparation of Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper of Bangladesh'.   Green revolution introduced modern farming methods throughout the world. But it couldn’t end starvation. Instead, it created many problems of its own. The fertilizers and pesticides used in this new method of farming caused water pollution, soil erosion and lowered soil fertility. They also harmed biodiversity and made farmers dependent upon chemical companies for their livelihoods. Thus the commercialization in agriculture is undermining farmers rights on agriculture system and food sovereignty in many countries. Rezaul Karim Chowdhury and Md Shamsuddoha of SUPRO writes an analytical paper in this regard titled ''Role of Civil Society for ensuring food Sovereignty in the South Asian Region: Perspective Bangladesh' , which has been presented in the SAAPE Workshop held in Kandy, Sri Lanka during 25-28 June 2005.
