MDGs
MDG Campaign 2008
Bangladesh is one of the signatories to the
MDG declaration of 2000 and committed to attaining these goals by the 2015
deadline. As more than half of the given timeframe has already elapsed; it is
necessary to assess the MDG attainments in Bangladesh. As a civil society and campaign organization
SUPRO began gathering information on latest status of MDG in Bangladesh context, and disseminated them
to raise issues on MDG achievement through advocacy and campaign. -To assess and measure the exact progress in MDG in keeping with the targets and existing socio-economic conditions.
- Review and evaluate the role and responsibility of the government.
- Assess and identifying the obstacles to implementation the MDGs
Bangladesh’s poverty
situation has deteriorated due to natural calamities and price-hike of
essential goods and commodities although improvement in primary school
enrolment is remarkable in the country’s pursuit of the MDG. SUPRO organzed a
discussion titled “Millennium Development Goal: Progress, Evaluation and Review”
at National Press Club, Dhaka, on 8 November 2008 Lawrence Besra, Project
Coordinator of SUPRO, presented a position paper and said, referring to Bangladesh
Bureau of Statistics figures, that the income poverty decreased to 48.9 per cent
in 2000, the base year of MDG, from 58.8 per cent in 1991-92. Poverty declined more
in urban areas than in rural areas. Again, the poverty level increased to 48
per cent in 2008 due to natural calamities and price-hike, according to the
latest unofficial statistics. Ahmed Swapan Mahmood moderated the roundtable.
Former state minister Abdul Mannan, Politburo member of the Workers’ Party of
Bangladesh Haider Akbar Khan Rono, former army chief and lawmaker Mahbubur Rahman
and former state minister AKM Jahangir Hossain were present at the round table.
Justice Golam Rabbani spoke as the chief guest. A total of 138 people (male-109,
female-29) participated in that roundtable.
