Consultation meeting on The Draft RTI ordinance- 2008 on 19th March 2008 National Press Club, Dhaka
In January 2008, the government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh has formed an 8 member committee for developing a draft law on Right to Information (RTI). After formation it was circulated through website for public opinion. According to the draft all public/government bodies, departments, directorates, institutions, local offices, or bodies constituted under public or private ownership are accountable under the Ordinance.

In this circumstance SUPRO organized a consultation meeting at National Press Club on March 19, 2009 for express opinion on the draft ordinance The meeting was attended by leaders of major political parties, journalist, lawyer, CSO leaders, activists and representatives of grassroots level NGOs.

SUPRO has developed and presented a position paper by the findings of districts level Round Table Meeting on draft ordinance. A strong consensus has been developed among the participants of the consultation meeting that urged to revise the article no 8 of draft ordinance and should immediately take action  for finalize and its implementation.

Participants also opined that the Official Secrecy Act-1923 is contradictory with the draft ordinance, so it should be deleted. Mr. Mahfuz Ullah – prominent journalist, Mr. Mozammel Hossin – Deputy Editor, The Daily Samokal, Lieutenant General (Ret.) Mahbubur Rahman - Advisor of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Lieutenant colonel (Ret.) Faruk Khan, Mr. Ruhin Hossion Prince of Communist Party of Bangladesh, Mr. Saiful Haque - General Secretary of  Workers Party, Dr. Hamida Hossion, Mr. Ahmed Swapon – Executive Director of VOICE, Prominent Lower Barrister Tania Amir, Samima Akter Munmun – Member of National Council of SUPRO, M.A. Salam -  Member of National Council of SUPRO were present among others.
