World Health Day on 7th April 2008


“Stop Commercialization and Privatization in Health Sector”

health.jpgSUPRO secretariat observed the World Health Day 2008 on 7 April 2008 at south plaza of National Parliament building in a very festive mood. Hundreds of people from various stake of the society enthusiastically took part in the rally and cultural event.

The slogan of the day was “Protecting Health from Climate Change”. In line with this slogan SUPRO came up with its own slogan as Stop Commercialization in Health Sector, Protecting Health from Climate Change.

To sensitize the mass people, SUPRO organized discussion and rally in 35 districts of Bangladesh . People of these districts submitted memorandum to the district commissioner after observing the day nationwide.

Speakers attended to the human chain said quoting the IPCC, “There is new and stronger evidence that most of the warming observed over the last 50 years is attributable to human activities.” They also said that the global average temperature will increase by several degrees of centigrade during this century.

SUPRO placed the following demands on the occasion of World Health Day:

  • State must take the responsibility of people's health. Stop privatization and commercialization of health sector.
  • Take necessary measures to increase the number of bed in the hospital from 51 to 100 at upazila level and doubling the number of doctors than existing level.
  • Ensure the presence of appointed doctors at upazila health complex. Ensure adequate medicine and balanced diet for patients.
  • Now, 3575 community clinics in rural areas of Bangladesh are dysfunctional or closed. Increase the budget allocation to re-open these clinics.
  • Government must be pro-active in quality control and pricing of medicine for marginalized people.
