Speakers urged at pre-budget seminar held by SUPRO
Ensure Food Security, increase allocation in Education and Health Sector
In order to make the next budget 2008-09 poor people oriented distinguished speakers have emphasized on food security, increase allocation and utilization of health and education sectors. There should a strong congenial coordination between state, market and society. We need democracy and democratization of the administration as well as devolution of power for empowering the grassroots people. Speakers urged at a pre-budget seminar held by SUPRO.
On Sunday, 20 April 2008 , SUPRO (Campaign for Good Governance) has organized a seminar titled “Preference in Agriculture, food security and Public Service sectors in the budget 2008-09” at CIRDAP auditorium, Dhaka .
Dr. Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmed ; Lt. Col. (Rtd) Faruque Khan, ex MP; AKM Jahangir Hossain, ex MP, and GM Qader, ex MP, Hasanul Hoque Inu, President, JSD, Rokea Kabir, Executive Director, BNPS, Shirin Akhter, President, Karmojibi Nari, Economist Dr. Pias Karim were made speech in the seminar. A position paper was presented by SUPRO Mr. Shahid Ullah, Coordinator, Policy Research in the seminar to initiate the pre-budget seminar. Mr. Ahmed Swopan Mahmood, Executive Borad member of SUPRO moderated the seminar.
“Stop Commercialization and Privatization in Health Sector”
SUPRO secretariat observed the World Health Day 2008 on 7 April 2008 at south plaza of National Parliament building in a very festive mood. Hundreds of people from various stake of the society enthusiastically took part in the rally and cultural event.
The slogan of the day was “Protecting Health from Climate Change”. In line with this slogan SUPRO came up with its own slogan as Stop Commercialization in Health Sector, Protecting Health from Climate Change.
To sensitize the mass people, SUPRO organized discussion and rally in 35 districts of Bangladesh . People of these districts submitted memorandum to the district commissioner after observing the day nationwide.
Speakers attended to the human chain said quoting the IPCC, “There is new and stronger evidence that most of the warming observed over the last 50 years is attributable to human activities.” They also said that the global average temperature will increase by several degrees of centigrade during this century.
SUPRO placed the following demands on the occasion of World Health Day:
State must take the responsibility of people's health. Stop privatization and commercialization of health sector.
Take necessary measures to increase the number of bed in the hospital from 51 to 100 at upazila level and doubling the number of doctors than existing level.
Ensure the presence of appointed doctors at upazila health complex. Ensure adequate medicine and balanced diet for patients.
Now, 3575 community clinics in rural areas of Bangladesh are dysfunctional or closed. Increase the budget allocation to re-open these clinics.
Government must be pro-active in quality control and pricing of medicine for marginalized people. PDF Leaflet >>
Call to scrap Official Secrets Act.
Speakers at a discussion called on caretaker government to bring major changes to draft of the Right to Information Act and to scrap the Official Secrets Act 1923 that contradicts the RTI act. They also urged the government to induct representatives from the political parties, civil societies at the media into the committee that will finalize the draft.
Shushasoner Jonny Procharavizan (SUPRO) organized the discussion on 19 March 2008 at the National Press Club. Prodip Kumar Roy, chief executive officer of SUPRO welcoming the government initiative to formulate the RTI Act.
The speakers said, there are some loopholes in the draft, which need to be removed. They urged the government to provide information free of charge and to shorten the list that restricts disclosure of information. They also called for scraping sub-section (jha) of Section 8 of the draft act.
Human rights activist Hameeda Hossain said the government should scrap secrets act that contradicts the RTI Act. She also urged the government to ensure maximum disclosure of information.
Workers party leader Haider Akbar Khan Rono called on the government to simplify the draft so that general people can easily understand it.
Former Awami League lawmaker Lt Col (retd) Faruk khan, former BNP lawmaker Lt Gen (retd) Mahbubur Rahman , General secretary of CFSD Mahfuz Ullah, Workers party leader Saiful Haq, Deputy editor of Daily Samokal Mozammel Haq and Barrister Tania Amir also spoke. SUPRO district leaders urged at international women day on 8 March 2008. 46 districts of SUPRO network observed international women day 2008 through discussion, rally and human chain. They demanded uniform family code and 30 percent reserve seat in parliament for women access in property and decision making process. They also demanded direct election for reserved seat. Network members also urged to the current regime to pay required commitment to equity and social justice by bringing necessary changes to laws that are inherently discriminatory towards women.
Cancel debt and develop fund with this for marginalized people
On 30 January 2008 SUPRO organized a seminar at Women's Voluntary Association (WVA), Dhanmondi, Dhaka titled ‘Foreign Debt Cancellation and Service Sectors: Bangladesh Context' . Speakers demanded in this seminar to develop fund for marginalized group with the amount of cancelled debt
Coordinator- Policy Research Mohammad Shahid Ullah presented the discussion paper in the seminar while SUPRO Chairperson Abdul Awal moderated the seminar. Mr. Qazi Khaliquzzaman Ahmad president of Bangladesh Economic Association presided over the seminar, Mrs. Tasnim Athar Deputy Director of CAMPE and Mr. Noresh Madhu Executive Director of SPS were special guest of the seminar.
Speakers demanded all sorts of debt cancellation of Bangladesh and divert the cost of debt servicing in service sector which poor people cannot afford due to high user fee.
Press conference on Climate change Develop countries should pay compensation 50 Billion Dollars for poor countries.
On 7 December 2007 SUPRO organized a press conference on `Climate Change' at Reporters Unity auditorium on the eve of `UN conference on Climate change'. The speakers urged to develop countries to pay the compensation for their destructive development. They claimed, carbon erosion of develop countries is the root cause of natural calamities like Sidr.

STAND UP, SPEAK OUT AGAINST POVERTY, HUNGER AND INJUSTICE SUPRO Observed International Day for Eradication of Poverty
Foreign Debt must be cancelled to eradicate extreme poverty of 30 million hard core poor of Bangladesh
SUPRO observed the International Day for Eradication of Poverty 2007 in 46 districts. About 1,00,000 people expressed their solidarity through different events, organized by SUPRO District committee.
In central level, SUPRO organized a cultural programme in front of National Parliament, where Prodip Kumar Roy CEO of SUPRO, Policy Research Coordinator Syed Aminul Haque, Networking & Mobilisation Coordinator Iqbal Uddin and Dhaka District Committee Secretary Shahadat Islam Chowdhury Mintu spoke in a gathering of almost 1000 male and female.
Speakers said that per capita foreign debt of Bangladeshi people is now US Dollar 151 (Tk 10,475). A new born child has to pay this debt. Every year Bangladesh pays US Dollar 715 million for debt servicing which is more than our health budget. Now the time is to raise our demands to cancel huge debt burden. Northern rich countries must pay attention to the debt burden of Bangladesh. We ask them to keep their commitment to the poor countries to achieve MDGs by 2015.
At the end of the cultural programme, a candle vigil of 1000 people express solidarity with the global movement against Poverty, Hunger and Injustice.
Progress, Review & Evaluation of Millennium Development Goals: Nothing for Complacency
3 Month Long 'Nationwide MDG Campaign 2007' Concluded
On 22 September 2007 SUPRO organized a national consultation on 3 months long nationwide campaign titled "Progress, Review & Evaluation of MDGs: Nothing for Complacency". The campaign was launched on 06 July 2007 on the eve of Mid-Term Review of Millennium Development Goals at Dhaka Reporters' Unity Auditorium, Dhaka.
In this national consultation SUPRO highlighted various recommendations regarding MDG achievement which evolved from districts seminar interacted by grassroots activists, political leaders, NGO workers & CSOs.
Renowned Human Rights activist & founding member of Ain O Salish Kendro Dr. Hamida Hussain spoke as key guest speaker while SUPRO CEO Prodip Kumar Roy welcomed the audience & Chairperson Mr. Abdul Awal moderated the consultation. Chairman of The Innovators Rashed Al Titumir, Convenor of Peoples Forum on MDGs Rasheda K. Chowdhury, SUPRO Vice Chairperson Mustafur Rahman Khan, Executive Director of VOICE Ahmed Swapan Mahmud, Mr. Shahadat Islam Chowdhury spoke among others.
Mr. Tanim Ahmed of New Age spoke on MDG 1 & 8, Mr. Biplob Karmokar of Steps Towards Development spoke on MDG 2& 3, Dr. Dipak Kumar Biswas of HASAB spoke on MDG 4 & 5.
SUPRO network members from 44 districts of Bangladesh were present & spoke in the event while National council members put their insights in seminar.

Aminul Haque, Coordinator-Policy Research presented MDGs goals, targets based on progress, challenges & recommendations from Bangladesh perspective.
On 10 June 2007 SUPRO organized a seminar at Conference hall, National Press Club, Dhaka titled ‘Rhetoric & Reality of PRSP: Grassroots Review of National Budget’.
General Secretary of SUPRO National Committee Mr. Rezaul Karim Chowdhury presented the keynote paper, while SUPRO grassroots leaders expressed their specific local demand at the seminar. Mr. Prodip Kumar Roy, CEO of SUPRO moderated the seminar.
The District Leaders from Total 43 Districts participated in this conference and gave feed back on Proposed National Budget. Sabbir Bin Shams from APIT highlighted the nature of the proposed National Budget analising the intern-ministrial and sectoral allocation of the Budget.
The Grassroot Demands which are not included in the Proposed Budget would be sent to the Finance Ministry from 43 Districts through e-mail with in 14 June 2007 as per Government Instruction.

On Sunday, 15 April 2007 SUPRO organized a seminar titled “Procedural Reform of Budget Formulation Process to Make Pro-people” at VIP Lounge, National Press Club, Dhaka.
Dr. Akbar Ali Khan, former advisor of Caretaker Government; Lt. Col. (Rtd) Farouqe Khan, ex MP; Brg. Gen.(Rtd) Safat Ahmed were present among others in the seminar. Academicians, development workers, district leaders of SUPRO network members were present in the seminar. A position paper was presented in the seminar to initiate the discussion.
